WELCOME,
About me
My name is Karl. I am a digital artist, lecturer, and scholar, based in South Africa. This site has been designed as a slow and thoughtful experience. Take your time to peruse its pages, browse, and meander through a collection of my life's work.
Read short articles
Before starting a research project, it is always best to test the merits of the idea with a short-form writing piece. My blog serves as a test bed for new ideas, interesting directions, or obscure topics that may, or may not, turn into larger projects in the future. New entries appear once a month or so; check back every now and then to see what new scheme I've come up with this time.

View exhibitions
With a long and storied history in the visual arts, much of it centred around photographic practice, I have been very fortunate to be included in a number of exhibitions. I've elected to showcase these works in a category of their own, separate from the projects who occupy a more nebulous space. Exhibitions, whether group or individual, are the material period at the end of a conceptual sentence. They are the logical conclusion to a research endeavour, or the relaxed sigh at the terminus of a productive period. Each exhibition I have participated in holds a dear place in my heart, and they deserve special recognition.

The amorphous term "projects" refers here to individual, experimental, or commercial work that has not been published specifically as part of a formal exhibition setting. That is not to say that I value these works any less than the gallery contributions I display elsewhere. Rather, using "projects" reflects the ongoing nature of my, and indeed anyone's, creative work. As artists or scholars, we are never satisfied with our creations. This category reflects less on my past relationship with creative practice, or even who I am now, but does help point in a direction of where I might be going.

View published research work
My research work pertains to published, scholarly, and peer-reviewed academic work. As a staunch advocate for Open Access, I include links to articles and other published research that is publicly accessible. In some few cases, the work is not publicly accessible, and I indicate this clearly.

Over the years, I have garnered extensive experience in creative, academic, and educational fields. While the other pages on this site appropriately document my portfolio in the first two domains, the About page provides an overview of my work history as an educator. Having taught at the Open Window since 2012, I am proud to have shared such a long and storied history with the institution.
